It is important when preparing your home for the market to
spend as little money as possible. If your home is not in need of extensive and
costly renovations, then simply concentrate on the polishes and touch ups of
your home. Here are a few inexpensive tips for preparing your home inside and
out for the market. Exterior
appeal -Keep the lawn edged, cut and watered regularly
-Check the foundation, steps, walkways, walls and patios
-Inspect doors and windows for peeling paint
-Clean and align gutters
-Inspect and clean the chimney, if need be
-Repair and replace loose or damaged roof shingles
-Repair and repaint loose siding
-Living in the Midwest during the winter you need to keep sidewalks and
driveway neatly cleared of snow and ice
-Keep your garage door closed, or organize it very neatly
to make sure you don’t look like hoarders.
-If you own RV’s or old beaten up cars, it would be smart
to store them somewhere else while your house is on the market.
-Apply a fresh coat of paint to the front door.
and for most, give every room in the house a thorough cleaning, and remove all
the clutter. This will make your house appear bigger and brighter.
-If you are too busy to do a very thorough cleaning of your
home, it would be smart to hire a cleaning service once every few weeks while
your house is on the market.
-Since you are anticipating a move, having a garage sale to
remove the less frequently used items in your home is a great idea.
-Repaint the walls, if necessary
-Check for cracks, leaks, and signs for dampness in the
attic and basement.
-Repair cracks, holes or damage to plaster, wallboard,
wallpaper, and tiles.
-Inspect and repair if necessary plumbing, heating,
cooling, and alarm systems.
-Repair dripping faucets and shower heads. Buy classy new
towels for the bathrooms, only bring them out when prospective buyers are on
-Spruce up your kitchen with new cabinet knobs, new
curtains, and some new paint.
